3.4 Aesthetic
a) Aesthetic requirements apply only to exposed and semi-exposed surfaces visible after installation.
3.4.1 Repair
a) Shall be compatible with the historical period or periods to be restored.
b) At transparent finish, repairs shall be made with wood of the same species, grade, cut, color tone, and grain pattern.
c) Distinctive construction techniques characterizing the historical period or periods shall be employed.
d) Wood patches of boat and/or diamond shape shall be used so as to minimize those joint surfaces at 90 degrees to the member’s grain direction.
3.4.2 Finishing
a) Requires the use of applications and techniques compatible with the historical period or periods to be restored.
b) Unless otherwise specified, Product shall be finished with a finishing technology per ANSI/AWI 0400 – Factory Finishing (latest edition) of the manufacturer/supplier’s choice compatible with the historical period or periods to be restored.
a) Stripping method shall be approved by the design professional.
b) Prior to stripping, surfaces shall be tested, with the process and results recorded, to provide the least intrusive and damaging methods.
c) Heat based methods of coating removal are permitted, provided the recommendations found in the National Park Service – Preservation Brief 10 Exterior Paint Problems on Historic Woodwork are followed or as allowed by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.
d) Existing finish shall be removed using multiple applications of stripper and hand scrapers without gouging, splintering, or otherwise damaging sound wood.
e) Sand surfaces with steel wool and the appropriate grit sandpaper to remove all signs of raised grain.
f) Residual stripping material shall be removed, including wax.
g) Stripped surfaces shall be tested for evidence of alkali.
h) Stripped surfaces found not to be pH neutral shall be neutralized and retested.
i) A written summary report, including before and after pH levels, shall be submitted to the design professional.
